“The Doorway to Humanity, Love, and a New Life in America After the Holocaust”
Lindsay MacNeill, PhD, Historian, Museum Experience and Digital Media
Gerda Weissmann Klein was among a group of Jewish women who barely survived a death march in 1945. When US Army Lieutenant Kurt Klein arrived at the vacant factory in a Czech town where Nazi guards had abandoned the starving women, he held the door for Gerda as they entered to help arrange medical care. “He opened not only the door for me, but the door to my life and my future,” Gerda recalled. Join us to learn more about their story and the life they built in America after the Holocaust.

Days of Remembrance ceremony at the US Capitol
The national commemoration of the Holocaust to remember the six million Jews who were murdered and the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution will feature remarks from Holocaust survivors, members of Congress, and other dignitaries. The 3d US Infantry Regiment (“The Old Guard”) will present the colors and the flags of World War II liberating divisions, and the US Army Band will perform. In addition to a memorial candle-lighting, attendees will pay tribute to the victims.
Congress created the Museum as a permanent living memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and established annual Days of Remembrance to be held each spring. This year’s observance is especially important, given the continuing surge in violent antisemitism and increased Holocaust denial and distortion.
We also will mark America’s 250th birthday in 2026 by honoring Americans who rescued European Jews, US soldiers who defeated Nazi Germany during World War II, and Holocaust survivors who cherished the freedom they experienced after immigrating to the United States.

Museum historian Edna Friedberg and Holocaust survivor Peter Feigl will highlight how sharing survivors’ voices is one of the most effective ways to inoculate young people against misinformation. The dedicated survivors who volunteer with the Museum are committed to ensuring the truth of the Holocaust is never denied or forgotten.
